NATE Certification
What is NATE certification? NATE (North American Technician Excellence) is an independent organization that certifies installation or service technicians with a knowledge-based test.
There are two core tests based on the technician’s career path: service techs take the Core Service test, and installation techs take the Core Installation test. Both tests are standardized 50-question, multiple-choice tests. But that’s just the beginning.
To become certified, technicians must also pass a specialty test with 100 multiple-choice questions focused on one area of HVAC/R.
Technicians can choose from nine specialties:
- Air Conditioning
- Air Distribution
- Air-to-Air Heat Pumps
- Gas Furnaces
- Oil Furnaces
- Hydronics Gas
- Hydronics Oil
- Light Commercial Refrigeration, and
- Commercial Refrigeration
The NATE test is not easy; not all technicians pass it the first time. In fact, 65% of those who take a NATE test pass. NATE certification verifies that the technicians who pass are the best in the trade when it comes to knowledge and experience installing or servicing your home heating or cooling system.
