Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
As energy prices skyrocket, home builders are pressured to construct energy-efficient buildings. And, although a tight building can play an important role in reducing energy requirements, it comes with a cost - poor indoor air quality. There is a solution: ventilation.

Ventilation can improve IAQ by reducing the concentration of pollutants indoors, which often contain concentration levels two to five times higher than outdoors. In fact, the EPA ranks indoor air pollution as one of the top five environmental risks to public health. EPA studies show that indoor levels of many pollutants may be 25 times - and occasionally more than 100 times - higher than outdoor levels. Another study by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts shows that indoor air contaminants are responsible for or aggravate half of all illnesses. Improving the quality of your indoor air could be the most important thing you can do for your family.

Ventilation can be either passive-air moving on its own through open doors or windows-or active - any mechanical means of circulating air and exchanging indoor air with outdoor air. Passive ventilation can help reduce indoor pollutants but can increase energy costs. In many commercial buildings, windows and doorways are sealed or otherwise protected to minimize heating or cooling loss. And homeowners often keep windows and doors closed to save energy. That’s why active ventilation has become so important.

Active ventilation methods offer better control to adjust air flow rates in order to meet acceptable IAQ requirements. Ventilation, however, is much more complex than replacing bad air with good air. Improving IAQ depends on a variety of factors, such as the number and types of pollutant sources in a home, the size of the home, and the needs of its occupants.
